I saw Dubai sparkle beneath my feet.
The Burj Khalifa made my knees go weak from the very first second. Not because of the height, but because I never expected the city to be so huge. Yuuki pressed himself against the glass and didn't move for ten minutes, as if he were counting the buildings. In the Emirates in spring, the morning light is still soft, almost milky, and the evening sun turns the desert into something I can't quite put into words.
Deira's Gold Souk gave me my first real headache. I figured I'd just "look around," you know, like a sensible tourist. Except the shop windows go on for hundreds of yards, the sellers are disarmingly kind, and Yuuki nearly knocked over a display while trying to catch his reflection in a polished window. That day I learned it's better to walk into a souk knowing exactly what you want, or you'll walk out two hours later with no idea how it happened.
The abra, the little water taxi that crosses the Creek for a few dirhams, was my favorite moment. No booking, no app, just hop aboard with a dozen other people, feel the engine hum under your feet and watch the traditional dhows glide by in the other direction. Yuuki kept his ears flat the whole ride. Me? I would have happily gone back and forth three times.
My favorite photos
Yuuki steals the show
The fountain show lasted eight minutes. Yuuki watched it for about two seconds, then turned around to face the crowd, looking thoroughly bored, as if he had seen it all before. When I finally turned around too, I realized everyone was taking pictures of Yuuki, not the fountains. A little boy even asked his mom if he was "the king of Dubai." And there I was, standing in front of the biggest fountains in the world, and not a single person looked at me once!
That ceiling haunts me
The dome of the Louvre Abu Dhabi is pierced with thousands of little stars of light. I went in to see the artwork. Yuuki looked up at the ceiling and froze, like a tiny furry statue. Eventually, I gave in and did the same. We spent twenty minutes staring at the same spot of light dancing across the marble floor, completely hypnotized. I walked back to the hotel without remembering a single painting, and honestly, I don't regret it one bit!
Don't move a muscle
The seller asked if I wanted to hold the falcon. I said yes with a big smile. The falcon landed on my arm and stared at me with its piercing eyes. When Yuuki saw the falcon, he didn't dare move a whisker! The whole thing lasted barely a minute, but it felt like an eternity. The seller burst out laughing at the look on my face. So did I, but a little later, once the falcon was safely back on its perch.
