Checkmate, cat style
Under the arch in Washington Square, an old gentleman challenged me to a game of chess on the famous stone tables. I accepted, convinced I could hold out for at least ten minutes. On the third move, Yuuki jumped onto the board and stretched out right across my pawns. The gentleman laughed so hard the whole park turned around, then he declared the game a draw! He told me he had been playing there for forty years and had never seen anything like it. Yuuki paraded across the entire park with my king in his mouth, like a hunting trophy.
The last har gow
In Chinatown, the dim sum carts rolled between the tables and all you had to do was point at the baskets you wanted. I pointed a lot. There was one har gow left, glossy and perfect, and I let it cool for one second too long. Yuuki slid a paw under the bamboo lid with the precision of a cat burglar. We stared at each other in silence, him with the shrimp in his mouth, me with my chopsticks in the air! In the end, the waiter brought us a second basket... for Yuuki.
Calm in the Cyclone
On the Coney Island boardwalk, I decided to ride the Cyclone, the old wooden roller coaster. Yuuki refused, then jumped into my bag at the very last second. During the first drop, I calmly noticed that the car was creaking and my hair was flying in every direction. Yuuki was not moving at all anymore. At the end of the ride, I struck my best pose for the official photo. In the picture, all you could see was a ball of orange fur and my bangs standing straight up.
