Cold is mostly a state of mind.

I booked my flight thinking I'd already seen snow in Tokyo, so how different could it be? Then I stepped outside in Montréal, and the cold went straight through me like my coat wasn't even there. Yuuki flat out refused to leave the backpack for the first two hours, which was honestly the most reasonable reaction of our whole trip.

What surprised me was how alive the Canadian winter is. People are outside, the markets are open, the patios are heated and packed. In Québec City, I walked through Old Québec under a light snowfall, the lit-up facades reflecting on the frozen cobblestones, and I understood why Quebecers are proud of their winter instead of embarrassed by it. The secret, someone once told me, is to dress in layers. I swear, it changes everything.

I waited three nights in the cold before I finally saw the northern lights. On the fourth night, by a frozen lake in the Laurentides, they appeared out of nowhere, green and silent. Yuuki had finally agreed to come out of the bag, and the two of us just stood there without moving, his ears pointed at the sky. I don't know what he made of it all, but he didn't move for ten minutes, which for him is an eternity.

Québec City in Winter

Wait, wait... I did not see this coming. Québec City in winter isn't just cold, it's an entire city that fully embraces the season and turns it into one big party. The little streets of Old Québec buried in snow, the glowing facades, the Winter Carnival in full swing with ice sculptures on every corner and music drifting through the air. Honestly, I could have wandered those streets for hours. Even Yuuki finally poked his head out of the bag to look around. That tells you everything.

The Frozen Rockies

Lake Louise in winter feels like another planet. The whole surface is frozen solid, the mountains reflect in the ice like a perfect mirror, and there's almost nobody around. The silence is so deep you can hear the snow crunch under every step. I walked across it with my arms spread wide like I was learning to stand all over again. The air was so cold my eyelashes froze, but I didn't care one bit. No, seriously, it's so beautiful it makes your head spin.

The End of the Trip

Before heading to bed, we got cozy by the fireplace, a steaming mug of hot chocolate in hand, watching the northern lights dance outside the window. The mood was absolutely perfect, and I couldn't have dreamed of a better way to end this trip. Yuuki seemed just as hypnotized by the crackling logs... until a spark shot out from behind the fire screen and made him leap straight into the air, knocking my marshmallow right out of my hand on the way!
