Bali, follow me in my footsteps!
Balinese Cuisine
You won't believe how exhausting it is to grind spices in a stone mortar. The compound's chef watched me struggle for three minutes before taking back the pestle with a polite smile. Yuuki, meanwhile, had already spotted the pile of fresh turmeric and was attempting to steal a piece without being noticed. What I learnt: the secret to lawar lies in the order of the spices, not the quantity. And that cooking barefoot on a bamboo terrace, with the scent of lemongrass in the air, makes all the difference to the final taste.
Diving at Amed
Amed disorients you at first: that volcanic sand, as black as ink, is unlike anything you've ever seen. Below the surface, however, everything explodes with colour. The corals of the Liberty Ship are barely twenty minutes of fin-kicks away, and the fish are clearly unafraid of you. Yuuki watched my snorkelling gear with complete suspicion from his volcanic rock, not moving a centimetre the entire time I was in the water. I swear, he looked like he was keeping watch over my things. Perhaps that's why I didn't lose anything!
Surfing at Canggu
The instructor told me I was doing well. Yuuki, sitting on the sand next to my board, clearly had a different opinion, judging by the look on his face every time I fell. Canggu in summer is lively, loud, full of energy, and the waves at Batu Bolong are perfect for beginners without getting completely wiped out. What nobody tells you: the hardest part is carrying the board to the water. After that, falling almost hurts less.
